How To Draw A Good Portrait

Drawing portraits can be exceedingly challenging for many art students. But why are portraits so hard to draw? After all, portraits are essentially the same as all other drawings, and are made up of basic shapes and forms. The key lies being able to execute proportions with exact precision.

When you take a closer look at a portrait, you'll observe that there are thousands of combinations possible for portraits. For example, there are noses with many different shapes and sizes. There are eyes with different shapes and colors. There are lips with different thickness and there are all sorts of little details (like eyebags etc.) that are different. This makes it difficult for the artist to apply a fixed formula when drawing portraits.

The same technique for drawing a fixed object, or for drawing still life, can be used again and again. The basic shapes and forms of a table or a chair is easy to duplicate.

But when you put together a combination of all kinds of different features on a face, it's a whole different set of challenge. The nose is too small, the lips are too thick, the eyes look all funny, etc. You get into all sorts of funny problems that you can don't get whether drawing other stuff. That's why drawing portraits can be such a challenge to many art students.

The way around this is to strengthen the drawing foundation. That means drawing by applying sound drawing principles instead of just following rigid formulas. If the artist can get the proportions right, the likeness of the person will emerge. There's no need for other complicated techniques. The artist just have to focus on getting the proportions right.

The other area of concern is that many art students do not have the maturity to make sound decisions about the portraits they are drawing. Note that drawing is not the same as photographing. The drawing need not be exactly the same as the subject. There is room for the artist to make decisions on how the drawing will eventually turn out.

Therefore, a good portraitist will always bear in mind the background and the essence of the subject that he or she is drawing. For instance, if the artist is drawing a business person, he may want to capture the shrewd look on the face. Or if he's drawing a model, he may want the drawing to look Hollywood style.

These are simple decisions, yet they have such a profound impact on the portraits. So good artists must use their judgment to make such decisions.

District B13 (Banlieue 13) - Foreign Film Review

District B13 (Banlieue 13)
Made in: France
Language: French

Synopsis: It is the year 2010. In this dystopic vision of the future, certain slums just outside of Paris have been walled off and isolated due to their "high risk" status.

Infested with drugs, rampant crime, and bad hairstyles, one particularly troublesome area called District B13 is reminiscent of the island of Manhattan from John Carpenter's Escape From New York, only more French (and possibly with better food).

Leto (David Belle) is a well-meaning punk who's in trouble with Taha (Bibi Naceri), District B13's tyrant drug kingpin. After stealing and then destroying a large stash of Taha's dope, Leto escapes the drug lord's armed goons in a brilliant building-to-building chase scene that has to be seen rather than described.

In this sequence, David Belle, who's a stuntman in real life, exhibits the art of Parkour (aka Free Running). Parkour is a sport invented by Belle himself, in which the practitioner uses the abilities of the human body to efficiently and creatively maneuver through physical obstacles.

Another vivid example of free running takes place in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale when Bond (Daniel Craig) chases down a bomb maker (Sbastien Foucan). Foucan also happens to be a good pal of David Belle.

Anyway, on with the review.

Soon after Leto's escape, Taha kidnaps Lola (Dany Verissimo), Leto's feisty younger sister. Although Leto manages to rescue her, their escape is thwarted by cowardly police officials who refuse to enforce the law, thus allowing Taha to go free.

Lola is recaptured, and Leto ends up in the slammer.

Six months later...

Taha gets hold of an experimental neutron bomb, and accidentally arms it. The French government, upon receiving this alarming news, send in Captain Damien Tomaso (Cyril Raffaelli), the best cop and martial arts expert in Paris.

More bad-ass than Nicolas Sarkozy at a cheese party, Damien has less than 24 hours to locate and diffuse the bomb. But to make his way through District B13 in one piece, Damien must convince the incarcerated Leto to help him.

And so, it's a race against time to save Lola and millions of other lives before Paris, like Jacque Chirac's credibility, goes up in smoke...

The Good: Clocking in at a mere 85 minutes, District B13 is a great example of tight, fast-paced storytelling. The action is creative and highly entertaining, the stunts are cool, and there's nothing in this action movie that doesn't need to be there.

David Belle and Cyril Raffaelli are both amazing stuntmen/athletes, and without taking themselves too seriously, they pull off some great moments that are beyond many conventional Hollywood action flicks.

With a slick techno soundtrack to boot, District B13 may be short, but it's short and to the point and feels complete.

The Bad: Some of the action is a bit far-fetched, but at least it never gets to the point of where it insults your intelligence (not mine, anyway). Also, a lot of the actors have silly fashion taste, but they at least get their asses kicked for it.

Who would like this movie: Whether you're an action movie lover with the attention span of a hyperactive donkey, or looking to broaden your cinematic horizons, this foreign film is for you. It's like a visual energy drink!

(3 out of 4 stars)

Director: Pierre Morel
Starring: Cyril Raffaelli, David Belle, Tony D'Amaro, Bibi Naceri, Dany Verissimo

Obama, Patriot or Political Grandstander?

After Presidential candidate Barack Obama's "National Anthem snub" the question that many are asking is "Is Obama a patriot or a political grandstander?"

By now most people have heard about Obama's "Sometimes He Does, Sometimes He Doesn't" as explained by an Obama spokesperson.

They further explained on Inside Edition, "In no way was he making any sort of statement, and any suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous." That's his campaign's reasoning for him not holding his hand over his heart at Senator Tom Harkin's Steak Fry event on September 16 in Indianola, Iowa.

A minor debate has ensued that his failure perform the traditional etiquette constitutes evidence that Barack Obama is unpatriotic and therefore unfit to hold the office of president. This is based on the idea that the gesture of dissent was intentional.

In all fairness since the definition of patriotism is in question here let's allow for clarification. According to the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Random House, Inc. 2006

PATRIOTISM - devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty. [Origin: 1720-30; PATRIOT + -ISM ]

So the question remains does Obama's position support that definition? Is he a Patriot?

This isn't Obama's first protest though! In an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Barack Obama states that he doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"The truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.

"I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest," he explained in the interview. "Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."

His campaign issued a statement: "We all revere the flag, but Senator Obama believes that being a patriot is about more than a symbol. It's about fighting for our veterans when they get home and speaking honestly with the American people about this disastrous war."

And Bill Maher ( the man who characterized the 911 terrorists as courageous) says, "...when I see the little flag right here, the first thing I think is, you voted for, and still like, George Bush...". Most have already concluded that Maher is truly a man who was born to be an idiot!

Here, in an excerpt from a letter written by Obama he explains further:

"Thank you for inquiring about the false accusation that I have refused to sing the National Anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance. I knew when I decided to run for President that I would not be immune from the "anything goes" form of attack politics that has been so prominent in our elections in recent years. And this outrageous charge is just another example of the kind of mean spirited, "shock" politics I will move beyond as President."

He later calls it as a "baseless and particularly hurtful political attack".

So let me see if I get this right. Obama believes that by telling us what he believes makes this country great and by taking a political stand for the veterans and the war that "that alone" qualifies him as a patriot!

Further anyone who questions his patriotism is practicing mean spirited, "shock" politics, a painful political attack, an argument, by the way, popularized and mastered by the Clintons.

Let's break this down:

The "National Anthem" and the "Pledge of Allegiance" have become an accepted form of reverence for our country and our overall form of government as well as a sign of respect for those who are currently fighting, have fought for and have died for our country and our free way of life.

It became popular in the 60's and has had a rebirth today to characterize those who show this form of patriotism as jingo's*! They were once labeled as old fashioned or having blind loyalty.
*Jingo(Jingoism) - a person who professes his or her patriotism loudly and excessively, favoring vigilant preparedness for war and an aggressive foreign policy; bellicose chauvinist.

So rather than attack the ideas he chooses to use a retro protest tactic to gain attention to his position. In the process he has insulted all current and former service personnel, yes those very people whom he wants to lead.

Additionally after his own indiscretion he wants to deflect blame to those who protest against his protest by portraying himself the victim of their mean spirited politics. Let's turn it into a Democrat vs. Republican issue. A petty argument!

Looking more like the Clintons everyday!

Obama has made a tactical error in decorum. Rather than emulate the controlled and respectful qualities of a leader he has resorted to a childish protest in order to gain attention to a political stand that he likely feels is not being taken seriously. He has provided us with a demonstration that is in the true spirit of the juvenile "Shock Tactic" style of the Generation X crowd where "Anything Goes".

So... is Obama a Patriot or a Political Grandstander?

Both, but certainly not a qualified leader!

SEO Lessons Learned From Stumbleupon, American Idol And "The 22 Immutable Laws Of Marketing"

One of my SEO friends recommended that I try a social website called stumbleupon to improve my generic rankings in search engines. Of course I was skeptical at first, but I tried it anyway. Stumbleupon shows you random websites that are based on your interests. I thought to myself, oh great, now I have to sit and look at a bunch of poor quality websites. But after I set my preferences, I expected the poorest and most irrelevant sites imaginable. To my surprise, I was able to stumble upon some very interesting websites and I found myself bookmarking about 5% of them. I rarely bookmark a site unless it has someone incredibly useful to offer. The reason that the websites were more relevant and better than what you would normally get from a standard query on a search engine is because over 2 million stumbleupon members can vote whether your site was useful or not and they can leave positive or negative comments about them.

This exercise started to make me think about my own sites. Do my websites offer something useful to visitors within 2-5 seconds? Do my websites make me to appear to be an authority on the subject? Are my websites easy to understand and navigate through? Do my website offer clear benefits to visitors?

I tried posting several of my websites up on their advertising section just to see how stumbleupon users would react to them. One of my websites received a lot of praise because I offered a useful free video on the top right of the home page that was relevant to my URL name and the landing page content. That particular video cost me $8k to produce and I was once tempted to set it up as a pay-per-view on google video but then I decided it would be best to offer it free to draw new and repeat visitors to my site.

I also tried entering one of my clients websites that has a recognized brand name. Within minutes it received 3 very positive reviews. In fact, two of the reviewers happened to be former employees of the company.

It was great to get the instant feedback for my websites and the exercise opened my eyes to some things I can do to further improve the way my websites project themselves to the public. Now I almost think of my websites as contestants on American Idol that might be voted off for poor content or delivery.

How can your websites avoid a thumbs down? I suggest asking as many of your friends to criticize your websites until the text, images or media on your sites themselves radiate The Law of Attraction. In other words, try to determine the positive ways your website should project itself to reach the targeted customers you are trying to attract.

You may also consider reading a book by Al Ries & Jack Trout called The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing. Try to align your positive messages about your products and services with these immutable laws of marketing. Start using the new demographic tools that some search engines such as stumbleupon are use to target customer interests and preferences. This information should help put you on the right track for increased traffic and higher conversion rates.

Bands And How Not To Lose A Million Dollars

My last article touched upon the importance of bands investing in themselves, and the different types of financial options available for bands looking to take a calculated gamble on themselves. So now you've got some money to your band's name. You are on top of the world, ready to make a positive change and take your band to the next level. But you also feel dangerously rich and this newfound, fleeting wealth is going to define you as a band from this point forward. How your band uses its collective willpower (or doesn't), how it handles temptation (or doesn't) will determine whether your group is building a sustainable, long-term career or is merely dealing with fleeting infamy and locals-only fame. And no matter how money you are working with, mistakes are expensive to make and can quickly add up. So, for bands that are truly looking to capitalize on their new financial status, here are some tips on how to avoid squandering your newfound pseudo-wealth so you don't again end up working two odd jobs without enough money to pay the rent.

1) Drinking and/or Drugs (Part 1)

Yeah, I've heard it all. "Its part of the rock and roll lifestyle!" "It's only when I'm on the road." "What are you, straight-edge? Everybody does it." To be clear, we're not talking about having a couple of beers. We're talking about the undefined drug cocktails, the band member who blacks out and has no recollection of what he did last night and last night didn't remember who he was. We're talking about those with a real problem. And if it your band mate's problem it inevitably soon becomes your problem. Drugs and are a great way to end up working at a car wash and being referred to locally as, "that guy who used to be kinda famous." The advice to avoid this scenario is simple: if you don't want to end up an alcoholic or an addict, avoid drugs and alcohol. The moment these scourges start to interfere with your band, you have a problem. And the moment you start denying that they're interfering with your band, you have a big problem. If this sounds like you, please get healthy and contact your local AA branch or MusiCares MAP (Musician's Assistance Program).

2) Drinking and/or Drugs (Part 2)

I have met countless bands who complain that they're broke. They go on about how they have no money to buy food or gas yet put money into 12-packs of Budweiser as if they owned stock. Now, let's do a little math. Assuming you don't have an endorsement where you obtain it for free, let's say you run a band bar tab of $60 for your various alcoholic beverages of choice. If you're playing even just on the weekends, you're easily spending over $400 a month on alcohol. And if you're a full-time touring band...you can see where much of your money is going. And don't even get me started on bands that can't afford new guitar strings and yet somehow manage to find enough money to buy their drug of choice every night. These intoxicated scenarios lead to a simple, yet poignant question: Which do you want more drugs or success, because the two don't go together well for long.

3) Spend $10,000 on a Music Video

I have met several bands though the years that are able to obtain some money and excitedly tell me the first thing they are planning to lay down some significant cash on is a music video. My reply is generally, "Why?" Because in and of itself, how exactly does a music video further your career? Does it independently increase your sales? Can you sell it to make you money to spend on other things? Do music video viewers tend to be motivated enough, without any other source of promotion, to buy your music? Invariably, the band gets defensive and mumbles something along the lines of, "We thought it would be cool."

There are two points to take away from this. First off, bands, you have no business at this stage in your career spending $10,000 on anything that isn't going to have a direct effect on your sales. Secondly, "Because it would be cool," is not a substantial reason to spend lots of money on things that aren't going to catapult your career to another level.

4) Indulge in Personalized Fancy Stage Gear

Another phenomenon I've witnessed is that bands with some money behind them seem to forget who they are. Do I mean this in some existential sense? No, I mean this literally, because they insist on everything - equipment, instruments, body parts - being emblazoned with their band name. And though there is no problem with this in theory, when you've finally obtained some capital do you really want to spend thousands of dollars on something as trivial as customized, matching road cases? Remember, at this stage it's not about what you want, it's about what you need and how what you need can lead to an amplified band profile, which results in increased sales and opportunities.

5) Order Customized Stage Clothing that Costs More than Your Rent

Like it or not, much importance is placed on the visual aspects of musical groups. However, it seems unfathomable that on a band's short list of priorities that stage attire would rank above something as integral equipment that reliably functions correctly. And yet, bands often put more time - and money - into their respective appearances than the more unglamorous, essential elements to their impending success. It again comes down to a group's priorities. When you run out of money and spend the next year playing the same ten venues because you chose trendy outfits over a more useful form of band advancement, will new outfits still be worth it? After all, who is going to appreciate your fierce new wardrobe if you are still playing in front of the same 500 people you always do because you didn't have the money to break into other markets?

6) Spend $30,000+ on Recording a New Album

Certainly, recording a quality album is every band's rightful priority. Bands need to spend enough that they get prime recordings and work with a producer they feel comfortable with. And there are definitely advantages to working with a "name" producer. However, at your current stage, it may make more sense to work with an up-and-coming producer who has worked with many notable bands, rather than a super producer who has worked with legends. Besides, if your band spends all of its money on recording the "perfect" album, with the "perfect producer, in the "perfect" studio, what's left to actually sell your "perfect" album? Remember, good albums don't sell themselves. If they did, then you wouldn't have had to obtain this outside funding in the first place, would you?

It is clear just how focused your band needs to be in determining how your funding ought to be allotted. Getting funded is only the first step of many that will directly impact your career. So remember to ask yourself the next time that irresistible temptation comes along - is this really necessary to our long-term career? If not, perhaps it's better to avoid it until there comes a time where you can afford to lose a million dollars.

The HD Media Future

Everyone knows that media format wars have historical significance in the world of technology. Remember the most notorious battle between the Beta max and the VHS? The winner of such battles will make millions even billions. Later we had the upgrade of tape to CD, a revolution in music. In 1980 the Philips/Sony compact disc standard was finalized and nobody has looked back for the last 26 years (until mp3's came along).

Well as ever there is a new media battle but who will win again is yet unknown. This modern forest of technological mass has produced a new insurgency: THE HIGH DEFINITION WAR. Blu-ray vs HD-DVD are two competing formats which are eventually going to replace DVD's. As you look around at your local electric retailers you can see changes happening in the broadcast world, not only are we changing from our conventional CRT screens to Flat screen but also to HD ready TV. The impact this has on our lives is not as large as black and white to colour, but nevertheless a change that will definitely be a benchmark for future media.

Why New formats?

The reason we have introduced these new formats is that your traditional DVD can hold a maximum of 9.4 GB (Dual Layer) of information. This is not enough for HD broadcast as the information required is higher, being a resolution of 1920x1080. Blu-ray discs can hold 50 GB (Dual Layer) and HD-DVD 30 GB (Dual Layer).

These new discs cannot be played on normal DVD players but on new HD media players of which examples are Samsung BDP 1000 (Blu-Ray), Sony Playstation 3 (Blu-Ray), Toshiba HDXA1 (HD-DVD). This means spending more money for better resolution.

Price

This is always important especially when new models of media come out; at first it is always expensive as supply out strips demand. The players are expensive, the cheapest being the Playstation 3 supposedly retailing at 549. Blu-Ray media also being expensive; similar to DVD's when they first came out (taking inflation into consideration), blank media costing from 11.99 to 24.99.

To play a Blu-ray Disc on a PC has brought about a price concern. The fact that you have to purchase a HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) Graphic card, along with a HD monitor, not to mention a Blu-ray Drive and media, controversially may bring about decrease in sales. This is presently being contested with new Laptops and PCs that are Blu-ray compatible, look at the New Vaio VGN-AR21S.

The HD players need to be up to scratch on price. The Toshiba HD-DVD player retailing at almost half the price of the Blu-ray Samsung player creates even more competition between the two media. This could encourage sales of HD-DVD over Blu-ray, even though it's rumoured that Toshiba will be making a loss initially.

Prices of movies doesn't seem to be as high as anticipated; a Blu-ray movie 'House of flying daggers' from amazon.com will set you back $19.95 (10.68). This may encourage sales. Movies in HD-DVD identical in price, yet Blu-ray is a larger size disc.

Upscaling

Another problem HD may face is that the new DVD players have the upscaling technology ie. DVD is played at 480p but upscalers upgrade the image to 720p or 1080i. This produces a picture which is of high quality to the untrained eye, in fact even the trained eye has difficulty distinguishing between the two. The difference is seen on a 50 inch HD projector and looking right up close. So the question is will 1080p be much different to 1080i? Will people fork out the added expense when they know that a cheaper DVD upscaler will create more or less the same effect?

Media Backup

Software and Hardware companies have invested a lot of money in subsidising HD media. Samsung, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, LG, Sony, TDK, JVC and Sharp support Blu-ray and Toshiba and Microsoft back HD-DVD. Hollywood movie studios Disney, Paramount, Warner, Sony, Eagle rock, Fox and MGM and Lions gate support Blu-ray also. None of these large companies would take such a gamble if they didn't know that this is what the consumer wants.

PlayStation 3

Sony love to bring out their own media whether its Sony Duo Sticks or Sony Mini Discs. Their hunger to dominate the consumer market has always been there and this is nothing different. The Playstation 3 will play Blu-Ray discs, still having the ability to play older media like DVDs and CDs. The success of the predecessor's PS1 and PS2 will give much anticipation to the release of this new console and is what Sony are hoping will convert people to use Blu-Ray. A Sony spokesman has predicted that Blu-Ray will dominate the HD market within 12 months.

The encouraging feature with HD-DVD is the name, everyone's ears will ring with the name and automatically assume that this is a high definition movie. Asking someone in the street what 'Blu-ray' is will bring looks of confusion, along with the fact that both will produce similar quality pictures.

Region Coding

Region coding with Blu-Ray may put people off; the fact that you may not be able to watch a new release from the states or Japan on your European locked regional player will raise eyebrows.

REGION 1 South America, North America, East Asia (except China)

REGION 2 Europe and Africa

REGION 3 China, Russia other Countries

Multiregional configurations on DVD players has encouraged sales worldwide especially with worldwide films from Bollywood, Japan (manga) and South America.

So far the HD-DVD camp has not announced region coding just yet, and if they don't then this will be very advantageous for consumers.

Future Proof

Realistically you only need about 15-20 GB for a feature length film in High definition but who would have known that DVD's could not be able to hold enough for high definition. Theoretically they can with MPEG-4 Compression. In any case media like Blu-ray will hopefully be future proof in years to come.

Conclusion

The timescale and price are the two main issues here, how quick we will universally change to HD and whether this is affordable. From a consumer point of view the necessity for HD doesn't seem imperative, after all VHS was around for 20 odd years twice that of DVD (so far). You could argue that technology is changing exponentially and that changes occur quicker.

As for the battle between the two media there may be compromise ahead. A UK firm has announced a solution to the media war. London-based New Medium Enterprises (NME) has developed a low-cost, multilayer DVD disc that can store Blu-ray content on one layer and HD DVD content on another. This would leave the consumer with the choice of buying either type of player to play the one disc.

The key setback I feel with the looming HD change is the cheaper alternative to a Blu-Ray player or HD-DVD player, the DVD upscaler. Do people want to get rid of those hundreds of DVDs they bought to replace them with an expensive alternative, especially when they might not even notice the difference in picture quality?

However I do feel that HD is encouraged with consoles such as the Playstation 3. Blu-ray is its main format and may revolutionise the games industry.
